Forming an Opportunity Belief: A Twist on Opportunity Identification

I believe there is an opportunity to allow there to be wifi throughout all UF campus with strong, reliable signal.

There are a lot of individuals that have problems connecting or using UF’s wifi when they are not in class or the library. This problem is usually for people that are trying to do assignments on their laptop somewhere that isn’t close to the center of UF. This need has been a problem for a long time. It even appears that the University has yet to try to do anything about it, so it seems it will continue for a little longer. People now have to over crowd the library, sometimes too much that all students do not find space. At this point I feel there is a strong 75% to go into this opportunity.

It is for students who tend to study in places like Lake Alice or other excluded places on campus.

First Interview: Gregory

Gregory seems to find this an important need due to his daily habits of studying. Greg was able to establish that poor wifi signal became a problem when he goes to study and finish his homework around Lake Alice. He was able to become aware of the problem this semester became this is the semester he forced new study habits on himself. He says there are days the wifi sometimes works for some reason and other days it does not. He is currently addressing this by not going too far around Lake Alice just so he can achieve functional signal. I proposed that we could create new wifi routers around Lake Alice by providing reliable routers that are able to sync wifi signal through all of them to reduce the need to dig underground to run cable through. He says he loves the idea since this idea would reduce the need to cause noise and distractions to the people who love studying there too.

Second Interview: Natalia

Natalia also believes this is an important issue that needs to be fixed. Reason why she said is because, “I recently lost my iPhone and had to use my other phone with no cellular data on campus. So it was important that I was always near wifi to get important notifications and that was not always possible walking around campus.” She became aware when she would walk somewhere new and the signal was dead. Currently she says there is no other way of fixing the problem because the school’s wifi is the only thing that is able to get me the connection to the internet. Her iPhone automatically disconnects too, so there are moments she has to manually connect it back to receive notifications and service. Natalia loves the idea of getting routers around campus that students can request in specific spots to ensure there is full coverage where students desire to be on campus.

Third: Angel

Angel is an individual who loves to do gaming on his computer and PC. He did not mention having problems of achieving signal, but it usually way to slow for him to download and play games smoothly. This became an issue during the fall and spring semester as there were way many more students on campus using the wifi for different things. This did not occur during the summer term as there are not as many people on campus during the time. Angel says the signal in his dorm did get a lot much better during the weekend but felt that it was still not the best it could be. He is excited that I mentioned the idea of bringing new routers to the University to provide efficiency and hopefully spread out people more on campus by allowing them to go to Lake Alice and study. This would get rid of a specific area being congested and now Angel has a better chance of playing his video games in peace.

Reflection:

My opportunity is not very original at all, but it is a problem that needs to be fixed. Not every entrepreneur has to fix a new problem as long as they are able to help out the consumer in some type of way. So there is definitely an improvement that could be done to better the Wifi around us. I think i remain with the same accuracy in what I want to do specifically. I feel entrepreneurs should adapt usually always to their customer’s feedback as it is them paying for the product/service.

My Entrepreneurship Story

During the year when I became my high school’s Spanish Club Vice President, I had to help come up with a fundraiser to afford our end of the year field trip to Busch Gardens. It required a lot of thinking about what we could possibly do that  required low expenses and a great return in revenue. We started to brainstorm what we could possibly make, when, and to who. We decided during the time that it was close to Valentine's Day, so we decided to dedicate a product/service that people who are trying to show love to their loved ones or even friends.

The product we decided upon was making “crush sodas.” Crush sodas is where we would special wrap a crush branded soda and apply a note that people could write a special note to the person. It was something that did not require much money to start and we even asked people to help bring supplies for participation points. This helped lower our expenses to zero and 100% revenue. We were able to sell it two weeks before Valentine's Day to get the maximum amount of profit for the event. Then we had people deliver the crush sodas during Valentine’s Day while they were in class. The fundraiser was a success and allowed everyone to go to Busch Gardens.

I joined this course to hopefully learn more in depth about performing a successful future business. I know nothing ever guarantees a successful business, but knowing what to know definitely helps.

Bug List

  1. During big events, it is hard to find parking on UF’s campus that people have to park on the sidewalk / grass.
    1. Why I feel it is like this is because there is not enough parking garages on campus to hold enough people for our football games.
  2. Having the RTS bus be inaccurate when it comes to prediction time on the rider app.
    1. The reason for being inaccurate is due the app not considering the stops the drivers take their breaks. Their breaks may only be a few minutes but it makes a difference when deciding which bus to take back home in a rush.
  3. When going to the gym it is very difficult finding the machines you may want to use since it usually always taken.
    1. Why this may occur is due UF’s decision on only having two gyms with student rec being so tiny it may be considered a half of a gym.
  4. Navigating quickly between campus is pretty difficult when most people do not own scooters to travel.
    1. This may be because there is not another type of transportation available for students like having electric scooters (the one where people stand on)
  5. Being somewhere on campus and studying not having time to go get food (usually during exam season) which can cause their to being bad eating habits for college students.
    1. We do not have a service that delivers food to students inside buildings like libraries.
  6. There is improper labeling for most foods when grocery shopping which can appear to be very bad when students or people that are not educated with nutrition are buying groceries.
    1. This is because most businesses do this to sell more goods by saying their foods are natural when they are not necessarily as healthy as they claim.
  7. I hate how I never really know exactly when my packages are going to be home during the day. This may be in the morning, afternoon, or evening.
    1. This is because most shipping companies, like Fedex and UPS, may not have the money to afford apps that allow you to track the shipping truck to see where your package currently is and its estimated time.
  8. Not knowing the exact amount of traffic that is being currently active on the roads.
    1. Why this may be is because the government may find this to be expensive to put in sensor around different cities, develop an app, and pay workers to keep the operation running for a public good. Yes, we have google maps and apple maps but sometimes they tend to be outdated within an hour period.
  9. Having one cable that charges every electronic device, like an IPad, Macbook, and IPhone.
    1. This may be because it would take away revenue from the company by eliminating a whole product like lighting cables and JUST PROVIDING usb c cables. It may just take away too much revenue it would be like Apple shooting themselves in the foot.
  10.  Having to spend too much time waiting for food at a fast food restaurant after putting in for pick up with an app like uber eats.
    1. Why this occurs is because businesses have not fully been custom to this technology since it is just coming to many restaurants. Thus causing there to be inefficiency.
  11. Not knowing whether or not the library is packed during that exact moment, so you may or may not bother even going.
    1. UF does not provide live services to view the library like it does for South West Rec.
  12. Having the feeling my phone can be automatically stolen and turned off.
    1. Why this is occurring is because cell phone companies have not made software that require you to input your password before you to turn it off, which means people can not track their Iphones with find my iphone. Meaning the thief would be caught.
  13. Hiring tutors that may be taking your class or has taken your class that are fully understanding it.
    1. There is not really an app or a service the college provides that can approve qualified students to teach others. This may not be in the school’s budget to do a service like this.
  14. Successfully counting all the calories that are in different foods when going out.
    1. This occurs due to every food being very different in size and ingredients. The burgers from Tony’s may be completely different from John’s burgers by 500 different calories. Even if apps do give you an estimate on the calories in a burger, it will never be accurate due to everyone’s cooking/baking is different.
  15. There can be inaccuracy of clocking in time for a job that has you clock in. You may have forgot to clock in or clock out.
    1. There isn’t like an app on your phone that connects to a sensor in the building when you enter that automatically clocks you in and clocks you out when you step out.
  16. An app that tells you where police in the area for awareness.
    1. Why this exists is because if people knew where officers were then they would ONLY slow down approaching them. The roads would remain unsafe when there is not a cop around because people would feel comfortable speeding over the limit. This may lead to more burglaries if robbers know there is not a cop within the radius, thus giving them more time to steal.
  17. My iPad still streaming Netflix after I have fallen asleep watching it.
    1. Apple has not created the technology to sense when the individual has fallen asleep to pause possible videos playing possibly turn off the device to conserve battery usage.
  18. Being rained on unexpectedly while being on campus without anything to stay dry.
    1. Why is because individuals may have forget to bring proper things to keep them dry and by having UF not provide a rental of ponchos or umbrellas for a day use while being on campus.
  19. Having no wifi signal within some places in the UF campus.
    1. Reason why this place exist is because campus does not have an alert/email going out to students asking if there are any areas where they might want to add service that gives inconvenience to students.
  20. Not being able to turn off the lights in the study rooms at the library. This is considering some people may prefer to study in the dark.
    1. UF does allow there to be switches within the room to allow students to control the dimness.
As I was writing the “bug” list, I came to a realization that the majority were from the University itself. They are not anything major necessarily, but those little things are what could add a lot of joy to the University. Fixing some of these bugs may lessen the stress between students on their daily life from the big amount of stress they already have from school.

Why a lot of these exist is because seems to be focused on a lot of big things to better our school within our rankings in Universities. For example, they are heavily focused on their online programs to make them more available for students around the world. This can easily be considered more needed compared to ponchos for students when rains, but adding electric scooters to campus can make the student body on campus be much happier and stress free getting to class.
